Meet A Roadrunner Masthead

David Morgan II '14 is a Roadrunner and a Minnesota Viking

Meet David Morgan II ’14. The former UTSA tight end just became the Roadrunners’ first-ever NFL draft pick with his recent selection by the Minnesota Vikings.

“This whole experience is basically a dream come true,” said Morgan, who played with the UTSA Roadrunners through his senior year, when he became UTSA’s first-ever All-American player. “There are a lot of things I’m looking forward to accomplishing as a professional player, and I’m so excited for the opportunity.”

Morgan is now in Minneapolis for training. He’s building up his foundational skills as a newly minted rookie with the Vikings — learning plays, sharpening the skills he needs to compete at the professional level and getting to know his teammates.

“I’m definitely bonding with these guys,” Morgan said. “We’re all rising to professional levels together. It’s been great so far, and I feel myself learning what I need to know to compete.”

Morgan says he grew in many ways as a part of the UTSA Football program. He credits his time at UTSA for giving him the leg up and experiences that got him to where he is today.

“No doubt that playing for UTSA has prepared me for the next step of my career,” Morgan said. “We played against some of the best teams and players out there. There’s still a lot I have to learn at the pro level, but I gained so much experience and knowledge from the Roadrunners that I know I’m ready to take that next step.”

He adds that the support he received from his coaches, professors, fellow students and fans is invaluable.

“I’m forever grateful for the experiences that I had being able to play for UTSA,” said Morgan, who graduated from UTSA in 2014 with a business management degree. “Being there from day one, seeing the program grow, and having fans show us love every time we went on the field, that’s great. You can’t beat that."

Morgan joins a growing number of Roadrunners in the NFL. Bennett Okotcha (Tennessee Titans), Jason Neill and Brian Price (Green Bay Packers) recently signed contracts as undrafted free agents with various NFL teams.

In 2015, Ashaad Mabry and Triston Wade signed free agent contracts with the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks, respectively. And Teddy Williams, former track and field All-American, who became UTSA’s first athlete signed by an NFL team in 2010, played in Super Bowl 50 with the Carolina Panthers.

“It’s huge for me to know that I’m one of the first guys to represent UTSA at this level,” Morgan said. “It’s not something I take lightly. I want to make those who supported me proud. I want to do well and inspire those who come after me."

Morgan offers the following piece of advice to future Roadrunner athletes.

“Empty your tank every time,” he said. “Play with everything that you have. Leave it all out there on that field.”
