Dear Faculty Colleagues,

We have finalized the process for the optional Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) grading that was recommended by the UTSA Faculty Senate and the UTSA Academic Council for Spring 2020.

You have already determined if CR/NC is suitable for your course and the Registrar is actively working on programming that into the system. The next steps are the following:

  • You should notify your students this week, April 6–10, about whether the CR/NC option is available for your course.
  • Students will go into ASAP after April 20 and select the courses for which they choose to receive CR/NC. They have until May 8, the last day of classes, to make their decision. If the student does not respond, the default will be the traditional grading scale.
  • Faculty can begin inputting final grades starting May 11 and have until May 18 at 2 p.m. There are some items to keep in mind as you input your final grades; it is especially important to keep a record of the letter grade a student received independent of it being converted to CR/NC on their transcript.
    • Please submit your final grades through Blackboard because the Registrar’s end-of-term processing converts to CR/NC automatically. This method substantially simplifies processing and ensures accuracy. F and NC grades require a last date of attendance and must be inputted into ASAP. View these step-by-step instructions on how to set up your grades in Blackboard to automatically transfer to ASAP.
    • If you input your grades via ASAP you will only be able to choose CR/NC if the student elected and an official record of the original letter grade will not be kept in the system.

Resources and guidance have been developed by Student Success to help students with their choice and the impact of choosing the CR/NC option versus retaining the regular grading system.

To be clear, this temporary procedure will replace the regular grading system only for students who opt in. Students will be free to choose the eligible courses for which they want to utilize this option. Alternately, those students who prefer to continue to have their work assessed by letter grades in these designated courses can make that choice.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we role out the optional grading process. We are greatly appreciative of your commitment to our students and their success.

Best,
