Career Development Plans for All Early Career Faculty

Dear Colleagues,

In an effort to continue to build a strong culture of faculty mentoring at UTSA, we have developed a tool for use by our tenure-track faculty and their departmental mentors that we hope will encourage fruitful and detailed conversations resulting in some strong goal-setting practices. Included below is a two-part Career Development Plan tool. All assistant professors should complete a Career Development Plan (CDP) annually starting AY 2020-21.

Part 1 of the CDP is a stimulus set of questions and Part 2 is a grid for detailing goals, timeline, and action steps. These plans are simple tools that encourage conversations between you and your departmental mentors about specific goals you have for teaching, research, and service. They also help you to identify resources (e.g., professional development, workshops, opportunities to develop skills, taking on new responsibilities) that you may need to support your success. One resource is the New Faculty Academy that all new assistant professors are to complete. These activities should be included in your CDPs. Early-career faculty should develop their CDP with their formal mentor and their department chair and revisit and revise it annually.

These plans will be completed within Digital Measures at the time you are completing your workload agreements and they will be viewable by your department chair and college dean. Included below is an image of the new screen in Digital Measures where each assistant professor will complete your CDP including the name of your formal departmental mentor

Download the following CDP resources:

You may also find the resources on the Faculty Mentoring Hub helpful as you develop your mentoring relationships.
