Faculty Senate and Chair's Council have agreed to establish a new faculty performance evaluation timeline based on the academic year rather than the calendar year. The proposed updated evaluation timeline will be available by March 2021. In the meantime, the annual evaluation process that would have begun in January 2021 for calendar year 2020 will be postponed.

Changes to Faculty Annual Evaluation Timeline

Dear Colleagues,

The University Calendar, planning, operational processes, and all annual evaluations are based on our academic year—with the sole exception of faculty annual evaluations that follow the calendar year. After receiving questions from many faculty regarding this discordance, Academic Affairs met with Faculty Senate and Chair’s Council during Fall 2020 to discuss whether the faculty annual evaluation timeline should be updated to the academic year, which would align the processes for faculty annual evaluations and workload agreements. The Senate and Chair’s Council agreed to establish a new evaluation timeline based on the academic year and a Working Group has been formed to develop it.

Therefore, the annual evaluation process that would have begun in January 2021 for calendar year 2020 will be postponed.

In order to transition to the new academic year evaluation timeline, the next annual report faculty complete will include work from January 2020 through August 2021. Thus, 1.5 years of effort will be evaluated using the regular annual metrics.

Fortunately, no procedural changes are needed to HOP 2.11, with the exception of minor edits to update the evaluation timeline and evaluation period to the academic year.

The Working Group, which includes a senator from each college, department chairs, at-large faculty members, and associate deans (listed below), will propose an updated evaluation timeline by March 2021.

We look forward to this updated process and alignment with the academic year.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D.
