Merging Teaching Philosophy and Studio Practice

Humberto Saenz is a Mexican-American artist residing in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Humberto’s artwork is exhibited throughout the United States and internationally in solo, juried, and invitational exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include exhibitions at the Janet Turner Print Museum, Catapult Press and Gallery, Coronado Print Studio, 42nd National Print Exhibition, Artlink Contemporary Art Gallery, The Fierce Urgency of Now: Socially Engaged Printmaking, Janet Turner Print Museum, and Third International Academic Printmaking Alliance Exhibition, Biennial Exhibition Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.

Humberto Saenz’s artwork is held in numerous collections across the U.S.A. and internationally including: The Museum of Texas Tech, Hamaguchi Study Print Collection, Workshop of Casa Hogar el Refugio at Monterrey, Mexico, Dishman Art Museum, La Salle University Art Museum, and the Janet Turner Print Museum. “Laura Blair Bodden” (b. 1982, Pleasanton, TX USA) is a contemporary artist who works primarily in photography. Her work investigates the idea of an in-between space, a space of transition. This is done by inventing a setting for liminal space by creating shadows from constructed landscapes to capture them within the camera. Process is an intricate and detailed part of her practice, building and constructing the subject matter for her photographs.

With her work, Bodden thinks in narratives and speaks with imagery that is both beautiful and awkward in the same moment. She creates images that speak to time and space, using imagery that plays on the border where imagination meets the real.

Kim Bishop is a nationally exhibited artist who has been working from her San Antonio, Texas, based studio for the past 20 years. Bishop holds a Master of Fine Art in Contemporary Drawing and Painting from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Master of Arts in Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Arts from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.

Her work is part of many private collections as well as the collections of the University of Texas San Antonio, Texas A&M Kingsville, the San Antonio Public Library, the Oxbow Tower and the Pearl Brewery. Her work can also be seen on the streets of San Antonio at several bus stops, as mural installations in the neighborhoods and across Texas in the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau billboards. Her latest public art piece is Poet’s Pointe, a pocket park in San Antonio that she designed with her partner Luis Valderas, opened to the community in June of 2023.

Bishop is a co-founder of A3, a pop-up industrial street press, 3rd Space Art Gallery and is a mentor for the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrant Artist program. She is working as a co-writer for the first Chican@ art curriculum book sponsored by the Department of Education and Centro Cultural Aztlan set to launch in 2024. Her mission is to socially engage audiences in the process of art making to create a healthier world. With over thirty-six years of art education experience, she is currently the Teen Programs Coordinator for the UTSA Professional and Continuing Education Department at the UTSA Southwest Campus and is an adjunct professor of Drawing and Visual Culture at the UTSA.

Luis Valderas received a BFA in Secondary Art Education from the University of Texas-Pan American. Valderas co-founded Project: MASA I, II, and III, a national group exhibit featuring Latino artist and focusing in Chicano identities. He is also the co-founder of Bishop & Valderas, LLC,3rd Space Art. His work has been exhibited at OSDE Espacio de Arte in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the Medellin Museum of Art in Medellin, Colombia. Valderas’ work has also been featured in books such as: Altermundos-Latin@ Speculative Literature, Film and Popular Culture. Mundos Alternos-Art and Science Fiction in the Americas. Chicano Art for Our Millennium-2004 and Triumph in Our Communities: Four Decades of Mexican American Art-2005.

His work is part of several collections including UTSA, the Arizona State University, International Museum of Art and Science, Mexic-Arte Museum, Art Museum of South Texas, Instituto for Latino Studies/Notre Dame and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Valderas has been arts educator for over 28 years in the Texas Public School system and is currently teaching at Clark High School in Northside ISD in San Antonio, TX.

Alex works across mediums, combining papier-mache, ceramics, painting, and animation into her craft. She creates work centering around the southern United States, LGBT themes, and domesticity. Currently, she is assisting Kim Bishop in UTSA’s Teen Studio Intensive program while working on her MFA thesis exhibition, also through UTSA.

Marcus Clarke attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn followed by a transfer to the Savannah College of Art and Design where he earned his BA in Visual Communication. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Sculpture at University of Texas at San Antonio where he specialized in light-based sculptures and installations. Clarke has shown his work throughout Texas and in Mexico City.
