Educators will be immersed in a variety of art educational and cultural philosophies, methods and strategies with an emphasis on applications to the classroom, community building techniques, and art studio practice.

Educators will leave with new ways of thinking about their curriculum, innovative techniques in art making, 30 hours of continuing education credit, and a new community of like-minded colleagues.

Workshop Format

The workshop is structured with discussions, artist presentations, and lectures each morning, followed by collegiate studio times each afternoon in painting & drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography, led by UTSA faculty.

Morning Sessions

Each morning educators will be immersed in a variety of art educational and cultural philosophies, methods, and strategies with an emphasis on applications to the classroom, community building techniques, and art studio practice led by Kim Bishop and Luis Valderas.

This workshop format will be structured with discussions, artist presentations, and lectures as these two seasoned arts educators’ partner to present their experiences in Classrooms to Community and their San Antonio Chican@ Artists Curriculum project sponsored by Centro Cultural Aztlan and the Department of Education.

Afternoon Studios

Educators will have their choice of the following studios by section and can only sign up for two selections. Studios include the following:

Printmaking Monotype: “The Painterly Print”

Educators will create unique individual prints and monotypes, that are often called “Painterly Prints”. This course will introduce educators to additive, subtractive and direct compositions of image making in the process of monotype that can be modified for any age level classroom. Educators will also be introduced to non-toxic approaches to making monotypes including elements of inks, paper, and printing their designs on archival paper.

Sculpture: “Coding for LED Light Sculptures”

Approachable to all levels of tech-y-ness, educators will be creating sculptural light lanterns. Colored LEDs and light animation will be created through coding the lights with Arduino and coding assistance from AI chats. Educators will also be able to design lantern projects digitally using Illustrator and a Cricut cutting machine while learning to solder wires to LED strips. This is a great foundational course to introduce artists to simple tech, and an example of approachable AI usage.

Photography: “Bringing Photography to the Classroom”

In this workshop, educators will be introduced to alternative photographic methods that can be introduced into their classroom setting, specifically the cyanotype process. This will be done through short lectures and hands-on demonstrations. Educators will learn how to create negatives from digital photographs and/or found objects, coat emulsions on paper, and produce alternative photographic prints.

Painting: "Color Theory in Acrylic Portraiture"

In this two-day workshop, educators will explore basic and intermediate acrylic painting techniques including color theory and mixing, color matching, using an underpainting, glazing, and layering that are easily adaptable for the classroom. Educators will use these techniques to create a color matched still life study before completing a live-painted self-portrait.
