Meet Jared Cruz-Aedo. Soon after the Eagle Scout from Corpus Christi transferred to UTSA, he was elected SGA junior senator and recently won a stint as senior senator. He quickly connected to the university through social media, which he says also had a lot to do with getting elected.
There is a lot happening at UTSA.”
– Jared Cruz-Aedostudent
With many Corpus Christi friends already here, he visited UTSA and liked it. He saw opportunities to help establish traditions at a developing university. So, to ease the transition after arriving, he got busy on social media.
In a flash, he learned about classes, special events and sports through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
"There is a lot happening at UTSA," said Cruz-Aedo. "On Twitter, I made a lot of new friends who told me what was going on. I wanted to get involved, so, I went to every event during Roadrunner Days and lots of organization meetings."
His favorite events throughout the year are BestFest and Fiesta UTSA, and he loves going to football and volleyball games. But, to allow for plenty of study time, he knew he could handle only one student organization. He narrowed it down to one group... Student Government Association.
"I like the way SGA members get involved," Cruz-Aedo added. "It's a great place to find out about events around campus, and they inspire me to get the Roadrunner spirit."
Coming in as an accounting major, he soon switched to a double major in communication and sports event tourism. He loves the Olympics... figure skating and Alpine skiing in the winter games, and swimming and track in the summer games... so, his career goal is to become a social media correspondent for the U.S. Olympics team.
With world championships every year the games aren't in session, he is sure a full-time career in social media is there for him. It sounds like a perfect match.
