Graduate Programs

The Department of Chemistry at UTSA offers a Masters of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemistry.

Master of Science Degree in Chemistry

The Chemistry M.S. Degree Program has thesis and non-thesis options. The non-thesis M.S. Program is a shorter degree plan in which coursework is a major focus. While research is always an important aspect of study, a comprehensive research project is not emphasized. The thesis M.S. Program is a more research based degree plan in which a comprehensive Master's Thesis (both written and oral) are required.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Chemistry

The Chemistry Ph.D. program emphasizes cutting-edge research to prepare students for competitive future scientific careers. Accepted students receive financial support through teaching and/or research assistantships. Our doctoral program focuses on research and thus requires fewer classes (3 core and 3 elective). A directed research proposal examination is completed by year two after completion of a course on research proposal development.

Please refer to the Chemistry (MS) and Chemistry (PhD) Admission Requirements for details on the admissions process. The main items in the application are:

  • Bachelor's degree with 18 credit hours in field of study or in another appropriate field of study
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate chemistry courses
  • Completed application form
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • A Personal Statement describing motivations and goals for graduate study in chemistry
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Either TOEFL or IELTS score (international applicants)
  • CV or Resumé recommended
  • GRE scores are no longer required
  • Application fee waivers available to qualified candidates

All considerations of admission occur through the application process, which is coordinated by the UTSA Graduate School. Our department is happy to provide advice to assist you in the preparation of your application. For more information about Ph.D. applications, please contact Dr. Zachary Tonzetich.
