Certificates
The Department of Earth and Planetary offers two certificates:
- Undergraduate Certificate in Geographic Information System
- Graduate Certificate of Professional Development in Geographic Information Science

Undergraduate Certificate in Geographic Information System
The Certificate in Geographic Information System trains undergraduate students from any UTSA academic discipline to be expert in using the Geographic Information System (GIS) tool for creating, operating, and managing geospatial data, making professional maps, and analyzing data for various science and technique applications. This certificate is open to any undergraduate level major that is interested integrating these skills into their career.
The Certificate in Geographic Information System is a 15-hour program. Individuals completing this certificate will gain a practical and hands-on knowledge of the Geographic Information System (GIS). All courses taken in the program may be applied towards a Bachelor's degree with approval of the degree program's Undergraduate Advisor of Record.
Degree seeking, special undergraduate, or non-degree-seeking students from any discipline at UTSA are allowed to complete the certificate. If you are interested and have taken the required five courses, you must fill out the Application for Certificate and submit it to Graduation Coordination.
Students who are not currently in any UTSA degree program may apply online as a non-degree-seeking Special student at the undergraduate level to pursue this certificate.
Graduate Certificate of Professional Development in Geographic Information Science
The Certificate of Professional Development in Geographic Information Science trains individuals from a broad range of academic disciplines to be competent users of Geographic Information Science and the related tools of Remote Sensing and web-based GIS data publication and sharing. This certificate is open to any graduate level major that is interested integrating these skills into their career.
The Certificate of Professional Development in Geographic Information Science is a 15-hour program. Although the program is generally oriented toward geological sciences professionals, individuals with business, social science, medical, engineering, computer science, criminal science, or education backgrounds will benefit from this professional certificate. Individuals completing this certificate will gain a practical and hands-on knowledge of Geospatial Science. All courses taken in the program may be applied toward a Master's degree with approval of the degree program's Graduate Advisor of Record.
Degree seeking, special graduate, or non-degree-seeking students from any discipline at UTSA are allowed to complete the certificate. If you are interested, you must fill out the UTSA Graduate Certificate form and submit it to the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences office.
If you have a bachelor's degree from another institution or you are not currently a UTSA graduate student, please apply online to UTSA's Graduate School as a non-degree seeking Special student.
