The Eagle Ford Shale formation is estimated to hold billions of barrels of crude oil, trillions of cubic feet of natural gas and other petroleum products trapped under layers of rock. Based on capital expenditures alone, the activity at Eagle Ford Shale ranks as the largest single oil and gas development in the world. And it's impact is being felt in South Texas, where small, rural towns are now facing an increase in traffic and soaring population growth. Here's a look at one city, Carrizo Springs, which has boomed from just over 5,400 residents in 2011 to more than 40,000 today.
