Through this initiative, UTSA will create a new downtown building, San Pedro I, to serve as the home to the National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC) and the School of Data Science (SDS).

NSCC advances research, education and workforce development in the areas of cybersecurity, data analytics and cloud computing. The NSCC will build a collaborative and impactful government university-industry ecosystem that engages federal agencies, contractor and industry leaders, and academia to solve the nation’s greatest cybersecurity issues.

UTSA’s newly created School of Data Science will co-locate the university’s 70-plus faculty members in cybersecurity, cloud computing, data and analytics, and artificial intelligence under one highly collaborative roof. With a new facility housing classrooms, laboratories and research space, the school will support bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as certificate programs and other professional credential educational opportunities. A focus on connected classrooms and cutting-edge instructional technology will provide flexibility for course content delivery.

Status Update (Spring 2024)

San Pedro I

In January 2023, UTSA hosted the grand opening of San Pedro I, a world-class facility that will usher in a new era of high-tech education, research and innovation in Texas. Located at 506 Dolorosa St. along the revitalized San Pedro Creek in the heart of downtown San Antonio, the $91.8 million facility will house the university’s National Security Collaboration Center and new School of Data Science, advancing economic development in the urban core and creating prosperity for San Antonians.

San Pedro I is the first project in UTSA’s phased, 10-year approach to accelerating the development of its Downtown Campus as a destination for producing highly skilled professionals in data science, data analytics and national security. The expanded capacity the facility provides will further position UTSA—a Hispanic Serving, Tier One research university—to serve San Antonio’s growing population and support the city’s future development.

NSCC

In December 2023, UTSA named David Brown as the new executive director of the National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC). Since its founding in 2019, NSCC has become a regional leader in cyber activity, partnering with federal and industry leaders to engage student and faculty researchers. The NSCC is Texas’ largest hub for government, university and industry partners in national security. Members of the center advance research and innovation in forensics, visualization, cybersecurity, data analytics, post-quantum cryptography, attack and threat modeling and mitigation, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and software, hardware and platform integrity. Additional areas of collaboration include training and exercise evaluation, workforce development and educational opportunities for students and the broader military community.

School of Data Science

UTSA’s School of Data Science (SDS) is the only of its kind at a Carnegie R1 U.S. Hispanic Serving Institution. SDS will offer data-intensive degree programs and research across every discipline. After a national search, in May 2021, David Mongeau was hired to serve as the Founding Director. He will lead 30 core faculty in delivering five graduate degrees, two undergraduate degree programs, and many certificates and boot camps to 100s of students. At least 16 UTSA research institutes and labs will be resident with the School of Data Science.

In January 2024, UTSA announced a pioneering initiative to reshape its academic landscape with the creation of a new college dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, computing, data science and related disciplines. This initiative aligns with the university's commitment to innovation and academic excellence while also positioning UTSA to lead in the rapidly evolving landscape of advanced technologies.
