UTSA celebrates National Mentoring Month with statewide mentoring summit Jan. 11
(Dec. 21, 2012) -- To celebrate National Mentoring Month, the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives and San Antonio Mentoring Forum (SAMF) will host a Mentoring Summit on Jan. 11, 2013 that includes a Mentor Recognition Luncheon from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Buena Vista Building Assembly Room (BVB 1.338) at the UTSA Downtown Campus. Invited guest speakers include Professor Michael J. Karcher in the UTSA Department of Counseling and Assistant Professor Victor B. Saenz from UT Austin's Department of Educational Administration.
The summit's luncheon will honor outstanding mentors and bring attention to the need for mentors for youth in our community. Recipients of this year's mentoring awards include San Antonio Fire Chief Charles N. Hood, Outstanding Advocate for Mentoring; Kevin Coggins, Outstanding College Student Mentor; and Raul Chapa, Outstanding Adult Mentor.
The summit and luncheon are part of a National Mentoring Month campaign that includes many activities across the country. The campaign's goals are to mobilize community volunteers to mentor young people and to increase knowledge about how mentoring can greatly enhance a young person's prospects for leading a healthy and productive life. Research shows that mentoring has beneficial and long-term effects on youth by increasing their chances of high school graduation and college attendance and decreasing the likelihood of substance abuse and other risky behaviors.
Belinda Saldana, UTSA director of community outreach states, "There is still time to register for the one-day San Antonio Mentoring Forum Mentoring Summit or to register to attend the luncheon only. Mentors are also welcome to bring their mentees to the luncheon."
The San Antonio Mentoring Forum is a UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives program and serves as an informal organization for mentoring organizations and mentoring advocates. It is a place where groups such as Communities in Schools, Big Brothers Big Sisters, School Districts, faith-based organizations, businesses and other mentoring advocates come together to share mentoring information, promote mentoring awareness and foster collaboration in the mentoring community. The forum is a UTSA mentoring initiative and focuses on one-to-one mentoring for youth in Bexar County.
For Mentoring Summit or luncheon information, visit the San Antonio Mentoring Forum website or contact Belinda Saldana at 210-458-2904.
