New name: UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning
(Sept. 15, 2014) -- The UTSA College of Architecture has undergone a name change to more accurately reflect the range of disciplines it offers. Effective immediately, the college is to be known as the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP). The new name was derived through discussion with the college's faculty and advisory board during the revision process of its strategic plan.
"We are very excited about the new college name," said John Murphy, Jr., dean of the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning. "This change was not taken lightly, in that it was discussed with, and supported by, both industry and faculty. The faculty strongly feels that a new name was needed to better represent the breadth of disciplines in the college. We have emerged as a national presence. We teach, we conduct research and we engage communities at a top-tier level within the realm of the built environment. Our college name must reflect more accurately what we do."
In addition to architecture, CACP offers programs in construction science, interior design, urban and regional planning, and historic preservation. The name change will help eliminate confusion and assist with the branding of the college among prospective students, faculty and employers.
The college's location on the UTSA Downtown Campus facilitates exploration of San Antonio's design, construction, city planning and cultural traditions. Students engage with industry professionals, conduct research and implement projects that benefit the local community.
As a condition of graduation, all undergraduate students in the college must fulfill a Signature Experience requirement, which is intended to expose students to educational opportunities that go beyond the traditional academic experience. Architecture and interior design students fulfill the requirement by studying abroad for a semester at one of the college's international studies venues in Barcelona, Spain or Urbino, Italy. Construction science students fulfill the requirement by completing an approved professional internship.
Home to the Department of Architecture and the Department of Construction Science, CACP also houses three research centers:
- The Center for Cultural Sustainability engages in research projects that explore the continuity of the cultural systems of human existence.
- The Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research focuses on community planning, economic, infrastructure, environmental, and housing and development issues impacting communities and regions.
- The Center for Architectural Engagement addresses, supports and executes community engagement activities with the City of San Antonio, counties and cities in Texas, and other community organizations.
