(Oct. 15, 2014) -- For the second consecutive year, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is ranked No. 7 in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics, according to an annual national report published by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

The report, Top 100 Degree Producers, also ranked UTSA No. 24 in bachelor's degrees awarded to all minority students, an improvement over the previous year’s ranking of No. 27.

Diverse Issues in Higher Education’s Top 100 rankings, which reflect the 2012-2013 academic year, document the ability of U.S. colleges to produce African-American, Hispanic, Asian American and Native American graduates. According to fall 2013 statistics, more than 60 percent of UTSA students came from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, including Hispanic (46.6 percent), African-American (8.7 percent), Asian (6.1 percent) and Native American (0.2 percent).

UTSA awarded 2,059 undergraduate degrees to Hispanic students, representing 47 percent of all UTSA bachelor's graduates for 2012-2013. In addition to the No. 7 ranking for combined disciplines, several academic disciplines at UTSA ranked among the top 10 undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics:

No. 1 -- Architecture (62 percent)
No. 3 -- Marketing (42 percent); Mathematics and Statistics (51 percent)
No. 4 -- Business, Management, Marketing (42 percent); History (40 percent); Parks, Recreation, Leisure and Fitness Studies (46 percent)
No. 5 -- Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies (52 percent)
No. 6 -- Accounting (41 percent)
No. 7 -- Biological and Biomedical Sciences (44 percent)
No. 8 – Communications and Journalism (50 percent); Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Firefighting and related protective services (61 percent)

UTSA's undergraduate degree award rankings for all minority students include the following:

No. 6 -- Parks, Recreation, Leisure and Fitness Studies (61 percent)
No. 8 – History (46 percent); Marketing (53 percent)

The new report coincides with a separate ranking by BestColleges.com, which listed UTSA among the top 50 universities in the nation for Hispanics. The college planning website based its analysis on UTSA’s academics, student engagement, membership status in the Hispanic Association of College and Universities, percent of Hispanic enrollees, and cultural impact.

In May, UTSA was one of 49 colleges and universities in the United States to be recognized in Hispanic Network magazine’s Best of the Best 2014 list. UTSA has more than 100,000 alumni across Texas, the nation and the world.
