Meet a Roadrunner: John Nix will help lead new group dedicated to voice study

(Nov. 26, 2014) -- Meet John Nix. The newly created international nonprofit organization, Pan-American Vocology Association (PAVA), selected him to serve as one of its 14 founding board members.

The UTSA associate professor of voice and voice pedagogy will serve as the PAVA chief development officer. The Utah-based organization, comprised of members from the United States, Canada, Central America and South America, seeks to advance the scientific study of voice through research, advanced knowledge, training, and the creation of professional standards and credentials in voice rehabilitation.

Nix says the organization will foster interdisciplinary collaborations and address developing certification for singing teachers and voice coaches who have special training and work with injured patients who are completing rehabilitation. Additionally, the organization will offer memberships to voice majors so they can attend conferences to learn and network with leading voice instructors.

"Researchers have known the capabilities of the human voice and now voice therapists are realizing that many of the techniques used in the performing disciplines can also be adapted for use with people who have voice problems," said Nix. "With this new organization, we can do a better job of collaborating, cooperating and sharing ideas and information with each other."

Recognized as one of the nation's leading voice pedagogy instructors, Nix has served as a section editor for the Oxford Handbook of Music Education and as one of three general editors of the Oxford Book of Singing. Nix is also on the Voice Science Committee of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Currently, he teaches voice, undergraduate and graduate pedagogy classes, and directs the UTSA Vocal Arts Laboratory. He also coordinates the vocal area in the department, which has approximately 70 majors enrolled.

Before coming to UTSA, Nix worked at the National Center for Voice and Speech in Denver and on the music faculties at the University of Colorado at Denver and Eastern New Mexico University.

He earned a master's degree in vocal performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder, certification in vocology from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in arts administration from Florida State University. His bachelor's degree in voice performance is from the University of Georgia.
