UTSA and Briscoe Western Art Museum host lecture by activist Dolores Huerta
(Dec. 3, 2014) -- Civil rights activist and co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association, Dolores Huerta, will present the year's closing lecture for the Distinguished Lecture Series: Voices of the West at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. The lecture is 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4 in the Jack Guenther Pavilion at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market St., San Antonio, Texas, 78205.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the museum and the UTSA College of Public Policy. Admission is $10 per person, free for UTSA students, faculty and staff and Briscoe museum members.
Dolores Huerta, a community organizer, social justice activist and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, has played a major role in the American civil rights movement. Most notably, she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez, advocating for migrant farm workers in the United States.
She is a founding board member of the Feminist Majority Foundation and serves on the board of Ms. Magazine. As one of the most famous and celebrated Latinas in the United States, Huerta has been an advocate for social justice, women's rights, reproductive freedom and LBGT civil rights.
She continues working to develop community leaders to advocate for the working poor, immigrants, women and youth through her work with the Dolores Huerta Foundation.
"Attendees have a unique opportunity to hear from a true leader and activist for the Latino community," said Tom Livesay, executive director of the Briscoe Western Art Museum. "The goal of the distinguished lecture series is to bring unique perspectives and experiences to our constituents, and we look forward to hearing from Ms. Huerta."
The Briscoe Western Art Museum, named in honor of the late Texas governor, Dolph Briscoe Jr., and his wife, Janey Slaughter Briscoe, preserves and interprets the art, history and culture of the American West through engaging exhibitions, educational programs and public events reflective of the region's rich traditions and shared heritage. Located along the River Walk, its campus includes the restored, historic 1930s art deco/neoclassical former San Antonio Public Library building, which serves as the museum space with nine galleries on three levels.
