UTSA Police Department to enforce city law banning cell phone use while driving
(Dec. 19, 2014) -- The UTSA Police Department will enforce the newly enacted San Antonio city ordinance, which makes it against the law to use a cellular telephone, unless it is hands-free, while driving a motor vehicle on any street or roadway in the City of San Antonio. The new ordinance goes into effect Jan. 1, 2015, and there will be a 30-day grace period for the public to become aware of the new ordinance.
San Antonio police officers will issue warnings to violators for cellular phone use during that 30-day period. Beginning Feb. 1, violators will be subject to a $200 fine. UTSAPD officers also will issue warnings in January with fines starting Feb. 1 for campus violators.
"UTSA police officers will enforce this new city ordinance, so we ask for the cooperation of UTSA community members as you drive on campus and in the city," said UTSA Police Chief Steve Barrera. "Our goal is always to help ensure safety as we also observe city laws.
"UTSAPD officers have the authority to stop vehicles when a violation is observed on city streets as well as campus streets, so our goal is for all drivers to drive safely on and off campus."
