UTSA hosts lecture by New York Architect Michael Gabellini Feb. 4
(Feb. 2, 2015) -- The UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP) Speaker Series will feature Michael Gabellini, FAIA, founder and design partner of the New York City firm Gabellini Sheppard Associates. His lecture, “Spatial Presence and Design Memory,” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the Durango Building Southwest Room (DB 1.124) on the UTSA Downtown Campus. It is free and open to the public.
Gabellini will reference his studio's portfolio to discuss themes of spatial perception and sensory environments, while touching on the relationship of history and modernity in contemporary design.
Cross-discipline collaboration is of paramount importance to Gabellini, who founded Gabellini Sheppard Associates in 1991. The 30-person architectural and interior design firm has gained international acclaim for its signature design aesthetic, which uses space and light as sculptural materials.
Gabellini Sheppard designs on multiple scales, including urban and commercial master plans, private and multi-family residences, fashion boutiques and retail centers, hotels and restaurants, and contemporary art galleries.
A registered architect in the states of New York and Nevada, and a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Gabellini earned his bachelor’s degree of fine arts and bachelor’s degree of architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He also studied at the Architectural Association in London and conducted extensive architectural research in Rome.
In addition to his studio work, Gabellini has lectured and taught design studios at numerous academic institutions. He received the 2006 National Design Award in Interior Design from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; the Progressive Architecture Award; and is recognized in the Interior Design Hall of Fame. Gabellini Sheppard has received 19 awards from the American Institute of Architects and dozens more from various professional organizations and magazines.
