UTSA celebrates, honors Black History Month with special events, collections
(Feb. 6, 2015) -- UTSA will celebrate and honor Black History Month with several events this month. The community is invited to join several UTSA student organizations, colleges and departments in honoring Black heritage and history.
The 2015 Black Heritage Month Student Planning Committee at UTSA, the UTSA Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion and University Center Programs have partnered to host the following events.
- 2015 Black History Knowledge Bowl: The UTSA Black Faculty and Staff Association will host a Black history trivia group competition at 6 p.m., Feb. 18 in the University Center Denman Room (2.01.28). Contact mallory.plummer@utsa.edu or the UTSA Today story for more information.
- 2015 Black Heritage Banquet: Sponsored by the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center, students are invited to a semi-formal, dinner banquet withperformances, award presentations and keynote speakers at 6 p.m., Feb. 26 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom (1.104) Tickets are on sale at Roadrunner Express. The three departments also invite the UTSA community to nominate students for the annual Outstanding Black Student Leadership Award, which will be presented at the 2015 Black Heritage Banquet. The award honors a UTSA student who has shown strong leadership skills and service towards the community.
Nominations must be submitted to The Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion ~ UC 2.01.04 by Feb. 11.The award will be presented at the Black Heritage Banquet, Feb. 26. For a nomination form or a complete list of events, visit www.utsa.edu/inclusion.
Nominees must:
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.00
- Be currently enrolled at UTSA
- Show significant campus leadership involvement
- Actively show service towards the community
UTSA Libraries invites the community to view the recently digitized San Antonio Black History Month Collection. The collection reflects on African-American life in San Antonio during the 20th century. Visit the UTSA Libaries' Top Shelf blog for more information.
The Institute of Texan Cultures will host "Buffalo Soldier Day" to honor the Buffalo Soldiers -- African-American cavalrymen assigned to the Texas Frontier. The event will take place from 12 p.m.-5p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8. It is free and open to the public.
