(Feb. 27, 2015) -- The UTSA College of Public Policy will host a lecture by San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 in the Buena Vista Street Building Theater (BVB 1.326) on the UTSA Downtown Campus. The lecture, “The City of San Antonio: A Discussion with San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley on the Nation’s Seventh Largest City,” is presented free and open to the public as part of the college’s Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

“Sheryl Sculley’s lecture will no doubt present a very insightful outlook on the current issues facing the City of San Antonio and an overview of the future of public administration,” said Rogelio Saenz, dean of the College of Public Policy. “We are very happy to have Ms. Sculley speak to the UTSA community, especially during Women’s History Month. It is an important time of the year to reflect on how women have helped shaped history, and how they have paved the way for the nation and world’s future female leaders and policy analysts.”

Sculley has served as San Antonio’s city manager since 2005, serving as the chief executive officer of a municipal corporation of 12,000 employees with an annual operating and capital budget of $2.4 billion. San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States with a population of approximately 1.4 million.

Sculley has 40 years of experience in city management. She has successfully balanced 10 city budgets by lowering the city property tax rate, and increasing financial reserves and reducing waste, while increasing police, fire and emergency medical services for the public. Under her fiscal leadership, San Antonio’s General Obligation Rating was upgraded by the Standard and Poor’s Rating Service to a AAA rating, a first for the City.

Prior to joining the City of San Antonio, Sculley served as assistant city manager for the City of Phoenix and as city manager for the City of Kalamazoo, Mich. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State University and Master of Public Administration degree from Western Michigan University.

Sculley completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She also has taught graduate courses in urban studies as an adjunct professor with the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at UT-Austin.

The UTSA College of Public Policy Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series features scholars and policy analysts on a variety of major issues that affect the community, the nation and the world. Lectures are free and open to the public, and free parking is available in Lot D-3 beneath IH-35.

A reception will immediately follow in the Buena Vista Street Building Meeting Assembly Room (1.338).
