UTSA to host 16th annual Texas Foreign Language Education Conference Feb. 20-21

(Feb. 19, 2015) -- The UTSA Texas Foreign/Second Language Education Student Organization will host the 16th annual Texas Foreign Language Education Conference (TexFLEC) Feb. 20-21 at the UTSA Main Campus. This is the first year that UTSA has hosted the event.

The conference, “Educators Equipping Language Learners for Future Success: Practices, Policies, and Curriculum,” will bring together teachers, professors, and students from across the state to discuss issues and best practices related to foreign and second language education, linguistics and cultural studies.

TexFLEC will commence with a keynote address by Dr. Elaine Horwitz, professor at The University of Texas at Austin, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 in the University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02). Her keynote is followed by breakout sessions and a networking event 6 p.m. for all conference participants.

The conference will continue on Saturday, Feb. 21, with keynote speakers Dr. Juliet Langman, professor in the UTSA Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, at 9 a.m. and Dr. Bonny Norton, professor and distinguished scholar at the University of British Columbia, at 1 p.m. in the University Center Retama Auditorium. Both keynotes are followed by breakout sessions.

This year’s breakout sessions cover a wide range of language-related topics, including foreign language instruction, vocabulary strategies for English Language Learners, language arts in an English as a Second Language classroom, language and culture, and classroom diversity. The conference will conclude with a special closing ceremony at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The Texas Foreign/Second Language Education Student Organization, a new registered student organization in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, organized the conference. The group is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from the department.

TexFLEC is sponsored by the Texas Foreign/Second Language Education Student Organization, the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and the College of Education and Human Development.
