(Feb. 2, 2015) -- The UTSA Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research, housed in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, will host a lecture and panel discussion on the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 in Frio Street Building 1.402 on the UTSA Downtown Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Gary Thomas, president and executive director of DART, will present the lecture, "Transforming North Texas Growth One Train at a Time," as part of the center's Dialogues in Planning series.

Since joining DART in 1998, Thomas has helped shape the 13-city transit system, which covers a 700-square mile service area with bus, light rail, commuter rail and paratransit services. Under Thomas' leadership, DART has doubled its light rail system twice to become the nation's longest at 85 miles.

Thomas administers the goals and policies of the DART board of directors, and he directs the agency's top managers and approximately 3,700 employees, emphasizing a strong customer focus. He works closely with service-area city governments and the public in developing short- and long-term transportation and mobility goals.

DART has been recognized for its innovation in developing a progressive clean fuels program for its bus fleet, advancing new models for local bus and paratransit service, and its customer-facing communication technology and service. The agency is also building strategic alliances with local universities to foster rich staff development experiences that support the needs of the growing multi-modal network.

Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Architecture from Texas Tech University.

A panel discussion will immediately follow the presentation. Richard Tangum, director of the UTSA Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research, will moderate the discussion.

Panelists include:

  • Lisa Nungesser - senior vice president and project manager for Parsons Brinckerhoff and adjunct professor in the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning
  • Terry Bellamy - assistant director of Transportation and Capital Improvements for the City of San Antonio
