AIA San Antonio supports UTSA Historic Preservation students with new endowed scholarship
(March 23, 2015) -- The American Institute of Architects San Antonio (AIA San Antonio) has committed $25,000 to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Architecture, Construction and Planning toward the creation of an endowed scholarship in Historic Preservation. The gift is a continuation of AIA San Antonio’s support for UTSA’s architecture programs.
The AIA San Antonio Endowed Scholarship in Historic Preservation will be a permanent endowment to support the education, research and scholarship of graduate degree-seeking students in the CACP who are actively pursuing a graduate certificate in Historic Preservation or Master’s of Science concentration in Historic Preservation from UTSA.
“Historic preservation has been of vital importance to San Antonio’s heritage for a long time,” said Jeffrey Fetzer, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and Chairman of the AIA San Antonio Scholarship Committee. “The preservation and restoration of old structures, from the Alamo to a small, historic bungalow in a residential neighborhood, reinforces the cultural, historical and architectural diversity in San Antonio.”
According to a 2015 report by the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation, the economic benefits of preserving historic districts in San Antonio can translate into millions of dollars per year in tourist expenditures. The CACP Historic Preservation program is a graduate-level certificate program accredited by the National Council for Preservation Education.
“AIA San Antonio’s new Endowed Scholarship in Historic Preservation will nurture a generation of preservation architects from UTSA that will next lead the important work in our community and beyond,” Fetzer added.
The CACP Historic Preservation program trains architecture students how to design for continuity and management of change within historical structures. A graduate certificate in Historic Preservation enables graduate students from multiple architectural program areas to receive tangible confirmation of skills and comprehension in historic preservation.
The graduate certificate program offers instruction in historic preservation design, technology, planning and management through graduate level courses. Learn more about the Historic Preservation program at UTSA.
"As a College and as a member of the San Antonio community, the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning is very pleased that AIA San Antonio has, once again, stepped up to support our students as they train to preserve the historic architectural fabric of our communities,” said John Murphy, CACP Dean.
AIA San Antonio, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, aims to unite the community of architects to advance architecture as professional craft and shape a more livable and sustainable future. In addition to the AIA San Antonio Endowed Scholarship in Historic Preservation, it also supports UTSA architecture students through the AIA San Antonio Endowed Scholarship and the AIA San Antonio Component Scholarship.
