UTSA hosts inaugural Global Latino Education Advocacy Days Summit March 26

(March 26, 2015) --The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will host the inaugural Global Latino Education Advocacy Days (LEAD) Summit from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom on the UTSA Main Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Global LEAD brings together an international group of educators, scholars, activists and community members to engage in conversation about the issues related to Latino education worldwide. The event is part of the yearly LEAD Summit.

The summit will begin with a welcome from UTSA President Ricardo Romo and opening remarks from U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro. Additional scheduled speakers include Enrique Murillo Jr., California State University, San Bernardino Professor and LEAD Executive Director; and Margarita Machado-Casas, UTSA Professor and Global LEAD Executive Director of Transnational Educational Exchange and Intercultural Relations for the LEAD Global Network.

This year’s honorary chairs are Secretary Castro, Grammy-award winning singer Vicki Carr and Ellen Riojas Clark, Professor Emeritus of Bilingual Education in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development.

At 9:45 a.m., a panel discussion, “Educating Global Citizens: A Conversation with Ministers of Education,” will feature representatives from five Latin American countries discussing issues related to education in Latin America. Other panels will cover a wide range of education topics pertinent to Latinos, including biliteracy, English as a Second Language, teaching and pedagogy, immigration and migration, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Award-winning actor Tony Plana will provide the keynote address on “Arts and Education” at 4 p.m. Plana, best known for this role as Ignacio Suarez on the ABC series “Ugly Betty,” is the co-founder and executive artistic director of the East L.A. Classic Theatre, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating children in East Los Angeles about theater and literacy.

Individuals, organizations, schools and universities unable to attend the summit in person are invited to sign up to become a Town Hall Viewing Event Partner via the Global LEAD website and host a live video stream of the summit.
