Meet a Roadrunner:UTSA architecture alum shapes San Antonio by mentoring future architects

(March 25, 2015) -- Meet Steven Marrone ’06. This award-winning UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP) alumnus is helping shape the San Antonio architectural landscape one project at a time.

In his work, Marrone is a project manager with local architecture firm Alamo Architects, where he’s worked intermittently since 2006. He is a multidisciplinary architect specializing in K-12 and higher education work, and he and his team have completed projects with several San Antonio institutions, including UTSA.

“I’m a huge fan of education projects,” said Marrone. “Working on a project for a higher education client really brings to mind the good that architects can do. It’s a great honor to participate in the designing and construction of facilities that are molding young minds in a positive way.”

Travel around San Antonio and you’ll see projects that Alamo Architects has had a hand in designing or remodeling, such as The Shops at La Cantera, the Strand and even HemisFair Civic Park. The firm is the 2014 Texas Society of Architects’ (TSA) Firm of the Year, and is nationally recognized for its many unique, modern designs across the city and its community engagement efforts. The annual award recognizes exceptional members, firms, individuals and organizations for their support of architecture, the built environment and quality of life in Texas.

Marrone has also been recognized for his work in the community. In late 2013, the TSA selected him as the Associate Member of the Year for his service as a board member of the American Institute of Architects’ San Antonio Chapter. Marrone has championed several mentorship and educational initiatives for Texas architecture students. An ongoing initiative called Fun with Fellows pairs young professionals with members of the AIA San Antonio College of Fellows, the highest level of membership within the AIA, for an informal evening of Q&A and professional reflection.

An outspoken supporter of UTSA’s architecture program, Marrone also serves as a member of the UTSA Architecture Advocacy and Advisory Council. He regularly speaks to current students and recent UTSA graduates about the architecture profession. He says he wants to provide students with as much positive support as he received while at UTSA. He also provides students with networking opportunities by introducing them to his fellow architects.

“The faculty at UTSA were a great mix of practitioners and academic thinkers, which really provided me with a fascinating insight into all aspects of the profession,” said Marrone. “A lot of my fellow alumni are also still working in the San Antonio area. It’s beneficial to leave school with pre-existing professional connections. If I can help connect a smart, driven young student with a great firm, I’m happy to do so.”
