(April 29, 2015) -The UTSA College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) will induct hundreds of UTSA education majors into the teaching profession at a special ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 30 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom on the UTSA Main Campus. Refreshments will be served at 8:30 a.m.

The Induction to the Profession of Teaching ceremony celebrates the achievements of UTSA students who have completed student teaching and other teaching certification requirements. The inducted students will be certified to teach early child education through sixth grade, middle school (4th – 8th grade), high school (8th – 12th grade) or all levels, a certification awarded to physical education, art, music and special education teachers.

Before UTSA education majors can graduate with their degrees and become certified teachers, they must complete a semester of required student teaching. The experience is designed to give them the opportunity to practice instructional techniques, manage a classroom, navigate a school setting and auxiliary services, and work as a member of a professional team.

“UTSA is the foremost producer of high-quality educators in San Antonio,” said Janet Scott, COEHD student teaching director. “Our student teachers are dedicated to serving their students to the best of their abilities and often go above and beyond to provide them with quality educations.”

Since UTSA’s first graduating class in 1974, COEHD has certified and graduated more than 7,500 K-12 educators, the most of any university in San Antonio. A majority of UTSA’s graduates go on to teaching within the San Antonio area.
