Two-Factor authentication requirements coming to UTSA
(May 6, 2015) -- News reports consistently show that cyber-threats and attacks in the form of viruses, hacking, and unauthorized access continue to increase in number and sophistication. Because passwords alone are no longer sufficient to protect high value University data, two-factor authentication is being introduced. A password is a single factor needed to gain access to a system. In two-factor authentication, gaining access requires having a unique object or token, such as your phone, in your possession, in addition to your password.
Beginning August 2015, each U.T. institution has been directed to implement enhanced "two-factor authentication" in certain high risk situations such as logging in to University networks using remote access gateways or accessing servers with financial information or confidential University data from off campus. The U.T. System has partnered with industry leader Toopher to provide easy-to-use smartphone-based two-factor authentication. Using this platform will lead to a greater level of identity assurance and security.
How Toopher Works Toopher provides user-friendly and secure multi-factor or two-factor authentication. This two-factor authentication tool will help increase information security and protect your data.
Using a mobile phone is the recommended method for setting up two-factor authentication. Toopher works with your smartphone (and other devices capable of receiving SMS or text messages) to protect your credentials by providing multi-factor authentication, eliminating the need for a separate one-time password.
When you are in a designated trusted location such as your office or home, two-factor authentication can be made invisible by using Toopher's built-in location awareness.
Don't have a smartphone or SMS-capable mobile? No problem! UTSA employees are still able to use two-factor authentication by using pre-generated one-time passwords.
Toopher Information Sessions UTSA faculty & staff are encouraged to attend a Toopher Two-Factor Authentication information session. More information about Two-Factor authentication and session dates can be found at www.utsa.edu/oit/twofactorauthentication.
