(May 8, 2015) – Cybersecurity experts from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), Congressman Will Hurd and members of area chambers of commerce will explore cybersecurity issues facing small businesses at a forum hosted by the UTSA Institute for Economic Development (IED).

Hurd, who represents Texas' 23rd Congressional District, will deliver the opening remarks at the Small Business Cybersecurity Roundtable. The event gets underway at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8 at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

The forum is designed to address concerns and improve the security level of sensitive information of small and medium-sized businesses. The discussions will focus on the importance of cybersecurity for small business, preventive measures for small business to combat cybercrimes and local actions that are being taken to identify and protect businesses from cyber attacks.

The UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) has become a national leader in the field, with advancements in digital forensics and secure design, and better ways to detect and respond to cyber attacks. The CIAS chairs the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium, which provides training and technical assistance in the development of viable and sustainable cybersecurity programs.

UTSA's cybersecurity research and education program was ranked No. 1 in the nation last year by a Ponemon Institute survey of almost 2,000 IT security professionals.

Albert Salgado, executive director of the IED's South-West Texas Border Small Business Development Center (SBDC), said UTSA is well positioned to help businesses develop cybersecurity strategies.

"The SBDC aims to equip small business with resources to assess and anticipate cybercrimes," Salgado said. "As more small businesses utilize mobile computing, cybersecurity is an ever-growing concern."

Members of the San Antonio Chamber, Hispanic Chamber and Southside Chamber will also attend the event, which will feature a briefing on cybersecurity programs presented by Jon Dickson of The Denim Group and Janie Gonzales of Webhead.

The agenda also includes:

Small Business and Cybersecurity/Panel Introduction on Cybersecurity

Levertis Davis, Nurses Etc.

Kermit Cruz, New Beginnings Capital Partnership

Harvinder Singh, Bestica Inc.

Will Garrett, Representing Greater Chamber of Commerce
