Romo joins other San Antonio artists to raise funds for UTSA art department
(July 17, 2015) – UTSA President Ricardo Romo is among 93 San Antonio artists who are donating their works to the First Annual Silent Art Auction benefitting the UTSA art department.
President Romo has contributed two photographs for the auction, which will take place Thursday, July 23 at the Plaza Club located at 100 W. Houston Street. UTSA faculty, staff, students and alumni along with members of the San Antonio arts community have also donated works.
"That 93 artists are supporting this event with their donations is extraordinary," said Arturo Infante Almeida, curator of the UTSA Art Collection. "It's great that all of these artists in the community want to participate and help us out. We are grateful to them and very excited about this event."
Almeida said sculpture, photography, paintings and other works will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to UTSA fine arts programs and scholarships. Almeida, a photographer, is donating one of his own pieces. Art department chair Gregory Elliott is also contributing work.
Fernando Andrade, Cesar Martinez, Ansen Seale and Gary Sweeney are among the many prominent San Antonio artists who are donating their work.
President Romo and Dr. Harriett Romo are avid art collectors, and UTSA has long been an active participant in the San Antonio arts community. In addition to working with the Arts Foundation of San Antonio and other nonprofit groups that support the arts, the university has also hosted exhibitions by San Antonio artists.
The UTSA Art Collection consists of more than 2,200 works, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and mixed media by many talented South Texas artists, some of whom are UTSA graduates.
Pieces in the collection are located in interior and exterior sites throughout the university's three campuses. The collection enhances the educational environment for students, faculty and staff, and makes UTSA aesthetically pleasant for visitors.
The registration deadline for the First Annual Silent Art Auction is Friday, July 17. Admission is $25 per person.
