Midnight Light kicks off the academic year tonight
(Aug. 13, 2015) — It’s one of UTSA’s newest traditions, and certainly one of the prettiest: the Midnight Light. Tonight, the second annual Midnight Light will kick off the academic year as President Ricardo Romo presses the button to shine UTSA colors on the Monuments at the campus’s entrance.
The award-winning architectural element welcomes everyone to campus, highlights the university's presence in the community and shows that the UTSA spirit is burning brightly. The lighting for the Monuments is full-spectrum LED lighting and can be set to display in a wide array of color combinations -- including UTSA orange, blue and white.
Last year, at the inaugural Midnight Light, more than 1,500 faculty and staff turned out to celebrate the beginning of the academic year. The event is part of Roadrunner Days, the official kick-off of the new academic year. The week gives students an opportunity to take part in new and time-honored UTSA traditions and connect with UTSA resources. Midnight Light is also part of the larger new tradition, the Monument Lights, featuring colored lights shining on the Monuments throughout the year to reflect special achievements and events at UTSA.
A committee of UTSA student leaders from the Student Government Association (SGA), Rowdy Crew and Honors Alliance spearheaded the effort with UTSA staff to create distinct color combinations that would reflect special moments in the life of the university. The Monuments' lights glow a soft white with blue and orange undertones on standard evenings.
Midnight Light begins tonight at 11:30 p.m.
