(Aug. 18, 2015) -- Welcome back, UTSA! The new academic year is officially in session today as classes begin on the Main and Downtown campuses. It’s an exciting time to be a Roadrunner; check out a little of what makes UTSA special.
This fall, UTSA welcomes 40 new faculty members, advancing its GoldStar Initiative to add 60 new top-tier researchers to the faculty. These researchers are among the best in their fields and specialize in science, education, engineering, business, liberal arts, criminal justice, demography and architecture. They come from top universities such as Harvard, Yale, Rutgers and Purdue and from universities in Argentina, China and Italy.
Even better? UTSA undergrads and graduate students are working alongside these world-renowned researchers to study some of the most pressing issues of the day in cybersecurity, cloud computing and big data, biomedicine, and social and educational transformation.
UTSA has also become a university of first choice for top students across Texas. The UTSA Top Scholars Program is entering its third year with a record class of highly talented freshmen students. As tomorrow’s leaders, the Top Scholars will be pursuing degrees in anthropology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics and political science.
This year, UTSA is expected to see its most academically qualified student body yet. Last fall, 60 percent of incoming freshmen ranked in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating classes, and nearly 90 percent were in the top half. Stay tuned to UTSA Today for more information regarding this year’s census, which is scheduled on Sept. 2.
Walk around campus lately? You might notice the fruits of our summer labors. We’ve created new food options, made facility improvements and dressed up a few of our shuttle buses to get ready for the start of the fall semester. Likewise, our Campus Recreation facilities and Student Health Services clinics at the Main and Downtown campuses are open to help students stay fit and healthy. For academic support, students can count on the Tomás Rivera Center for Student Success and the San Antonio Writing Project.
Roadrunner Days is also in full swing. UTSA President Ricardo Romo is hosting two free welcome back BBQs today. See roadrunnerdays.utsa.edu for details.
Join us and celebrate all that it means to be a Roadrunner.
