UTSA among most Military Friendly Schools™ in the U.S. for sixth year
(Dec. 1, 2015) -- For the sixth consecutive year, UTSA has been designated a Military Friendly™ School for 2016 by G.I. Jobs and Victory Media Inc. The 2016 Military Friendly™ Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools across the country that are doing the most to embrace the nation’s active military service members and veterans.
From 2009 to 2013, UTSA certified more individuals with Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits than any other public, four-year university in Texas, according to the Veterans Administration.
The announcement comes on the heels of UTSA’s designation as a Best for Vets university for 2016 by the Military Times.
G.I. Jobs’ Military Friendly™ list honors institutions that have shown a commitment to the recruitment of students with military experience by offering services such as scholarship opportunities, discounts, military credits, veterans-focused organizations and full-time staff dedicated to assisting military-affiliated and veteran students.
About 10 percent of UTSA’s enrollment is military affiliated. These include military veterans, active duty military and military dependents.
The Veteran Services Advisory Committee (VSAC), comprised of veterans and supporters from across UTSA, was established at the university in 2011. It oversees the coordination and implementation of the university’s services and advises UTSA’s president on issues relating to veterans and active military.
The university provides top-tier networks, services and programs for its military community, including the Veterans Certification Office, the VetSuccess on Campus program, which provides two full-time vocational counselors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Student Veterans Association. Services include comprehensive counseling, specialized tutoring, life-skills assistance, first-class ROTC programs, career counseling with staff trained in assisting veterans and active military students, networking opportunities through student organizations and professional development, annual veteran and military recognition events, and financial assistance.
“UTSA, the VSAC and the Student Veterans Association are constantly working together to create the best possible environment for fellow veterans, active/reserve military and dependents to pursue their academic endeavors,” said Tyler Wynne, president of the UTSA Student Veterans Association and member of the VSAC. “We’re proud to be able to help our fellow veterans get a quality education and continue their civilian careers by providing access to the support network of the military family of UTSA and San Antonio: Military City, USA.”
About the Military Friendly Schools List
The Military Friendly™ designation is a premier, trusted resource for post-military success. It provides service members and veterans with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military educational and career opportunities.
The Military Friendly™ Schools list captures information from more than 8,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 G.I. Bill Funding. Its initial survey, methodology, criteria and weightings are developed by the Military Friendly organization with the assistance of an independent academic advisory board comprised of educators from schools across the country.
The survey accounts for more than 50 leading practices in supporting military-affiliated students, and it is administered at no charge to all post-secondary schools. View criteria for consideration on the Military Friendly™ website and a complete list of schools by using the Schools Matchmaker tool on the G.I. Jobs website.
