What you need to know about upcoming UTSA Giving Day

MARCH 23, 2021 — There are just two weeks until UTSA Giving Day on April 6–7. For the first time the university will offer all of Roadrunner Nation the opportunity to come together to celebrate connections to UTSA and raise record funds to benefit students, faculty and staff.

Similar to the Big Give San Antonio, when giving to the nonprofit community is encouraged, UTSA Giving Day will unite alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends to “Build the Nest” in support of their favorite colleges and programs. Such support keeps many outstanding educational experiences that are offered by the university affordable for students.

“Giving days are a proven model in higher education fundraising because they make a big difference for students and the university,” said Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Karl Miller-Lugo. “Launching this effort, especially at this time, is a bold move, and we are confident our community wants to see it succeed for the benefit of students.”

The online fundraising event will officially begin April 6 at 10:11 a.m. Central Time and conclude 1,969 minutes later on April 7 at 7 p.m. Participants can direct gifts to several projects, including all academic colleges, UTSA Libraries, the Spirit of San Antonio marching band, the Roadrunner Pantry, Friends of Music, UTSA Athletics, Student Emergency Funds, the Family Fund, UTSA Alumni Association scholarships and more.

Here are five ways that supporters can get involved:

  • Register to be an official ambassador. Online ambassadors agree to share posts on social media and encourage others to give by sending texts or email. In return, they can earn UTSA swag and be entered to win a custom UTSA YETI tumbler.

  • Share about UTSA Giving Day on social media. Participate in one of the planned social media challenges using the hashtag #BuildtheNest.

  • Be a challenge sponsor. Challenges are special opportunities to encourage donations or social media participation. For example, the first gift donor on the first day will earn their project an additional $250 that has been donated by alumnus Clayton Zavisch ’04. Sponsorship opportunities start at $250.   • Join the live kick-off on Facebook on April 6 at 10 a.m. Details will be shared soon.

  • Plan for power hours. Power hours are periods when gifts are matched or the cause that engages the most donors will receive an additional $1,000. Participation power hours are planned for:
    • April 6: 10:11 a.m. to noon (matched 1:1 up to $1,000)
    • April 6–7: 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. (most donors)
    • April 7: 6–8 a.m. (matched 1:1 up to $1,000)
    • April 7: 5–7 p.m. (most donors)

UTSA Giving Day has set a goal to receive donations from at least 1,969 donors and from all 50 states during the event. Additionally, the event’s task force hopes that the amount raised exceeds giving day results generated by other UT System and Texas universities.

The effort will be tracked on the UTSA Giving Day website, which will include totals for colleges and key programs from across the university. Leader boards on the website will track the colleges and programs with greatest number of donors and dollars raised, and those units will have an opportunity to earn additional funds. Social media pages will also feature live video feeds and provide updates.

“In 2020, because of the pandemic, we had to suspend or pull back some of the fundraising efforts that the university traditionally relied on to generate support, such as the phonathon, where students call our alumni and parents,” said Miller-Lugo. “We are hopeful that Roadrunner Nation and our community will respond as part of UTSA Giving Day to help not only replace but enhance the philanthropic support generated through those efforts. Everyone who donates helps ‘Build the Nest’ to provide resources so that UTSA can emerge from the pandemic with a continued focus on student success.”

“Having Roadrunner alumni and friends from across the country and around the globe participate will make UTSA Giving Day successful for students in a fun, exciting and impactful way,” said Gage Martin ’21, president of the Roadrunner Student Alumni Association, who will be directing his Giving Day contribution to the Student Emergency Fund. “I cannot wait to see how we do because I know each gift will make a difference.”
