UTSA hosts Trust for University Innovation in Vietnam

UTSA hosts Trust for University Innovation in Vietnam

Dec. 20, 2019 —UTSA hosted a delegation of officials from the Trust for University Innovation in Vietnam, the governing board of Fulbright University Vietnam, a newly formed institution that is building the next generation of Vietnamese leaders equipped with the skills to tackle global challenges.

Board members from TUIV joined leadership from UTSA, UT System and various City of San Antonio officials to explore opportunities for international collaboration and foreign exchange programs in cybersecurity.

UTSA President Taylor Eighmy and retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Guy M. Walsh, executive director of the National Security Collaboration Center, hosted the delegation and led discussions on the importance of international coordination and explored shared challenges surrounding workforce development in computational fields such as computer science and cybersecurity. The group focused on educational support for international students and strengthening exchange programs between nations.

According to the (ISC)² Cybersecurity Workforce Study, the global cybersecurity workforce needs to grow by 145% to meet the demand for skilled cybersecurity talent. “UTSA is excited to explore a strategic partnership with FUV around computer science, data science and cybersecurity. FUV is on an upward trajectory, and we look forward to collaborating as it develops an academic foundation, research portfolio and a knowledge economy in this critical arena,” said Eighmy.

Tom Vallely, chairman of the board of TUIV, emphasized that strategic coordination with significant developing countries such as Vietnam can advance U.S. national cybersecurity strategy.

“You can’t think about cybersecurity without strengthening computer science capacity,” explained Vallely. “Fulbright University Vietnam needs partners such as UTSA to build our program and to break down barriers to global cybersecurity education.”

FUV, located in Ho Chi Minh City, is starting with approximately 15 faculty and 300 students in its first year, but aims to grow significantly through partnerships with universities throughout the United States, including UTSA.
