Information Security Instructors

Robert “Tony” Burris

Position: Adjunct Professor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Tony began with CIAS in 2017 and brings with him over 26 years of active Joint/Coalition, DoD, and Interagency cybersecurity experience to the CIAS staff.


Mr. Burris serves as a Senior Cyber/Information Security Instructor with active participation with CIAS in three major programs; ANG Cyber Executive Leadership - Cyber Security Training, Small Business Cyber Training Academy, and National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium. In each program, he assists the development, design, and implementation of initiatives to enhance cybersecurity education of the nation’s Defense and Interagency partners.


The majority of Mr. Burris’s experience has been in the planning, programming, and operational execution of cyber security capabilities at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels. His focus has been on developing capabilities for the nation to respond to the threats to our nations weapon systems and critical infrastructure. Tony was also instrumental in building a cyber response force and building resilient infrastructures across the 54 States and Territories.


He received his foundational education from undergraduate work in Computer Science, graduate level in Strategic Studies with a concentration Joint Computer Network Operations, and Chief Information Officer/Infrastructure Assurance and Security studies.


He speaks regularly for professional groups, meetings, panels and conferences across the country including the premier Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association conferences.


Juan Munoz

Position: Senior Information Security Instructor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Juan began with the CIAS in 2017 and brings over 10 years of cybersecurity experience to the CIAS training staff.


Mr. Munoz serves as expert cyber professional in the 688th Cyber Wing, Joint Base San Antonio Lackland. In this role he provides Defensive Cyber Operational effects, Information Assurance (IA), and Mission Assurance (MA) to combatant commander missions. In addition, he provides technical guidance and advisory support on projects for various operations.


The majority of Mr. Munoz’s experience has been performing a broad range of IA and MA assignments entailing unique problems to improve the security posture of existing, new, and upgraded Air Force information systems. His focus has been working with cyber protection teams and the intelligence community to emulate common adversaries.


He received his degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineer. He has earned the CompTIA Security +, GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC), and GIAC Certified Incident Handling (GCIH) certifications.


Mr. Munoz authored a white paper on Contemporary Wireless Attacks for the University of Texas at Austin.


Jeff Reich

Position: Senior Information Security Instructor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Jeff joined CIAS in 2017 and brings over 45 years of security experience with the most recent 38 years focused on information security.


Currently the Co-Founder and COO of LexAlign, Mr. Reich has developed a history of entering situations where little to no security or risk management infrastructure exists or an existing system needs updating. He has started and led the security and risk management programs at a list of companies that includes Rackspace, Dell, CheckFree, ARCO, and others.


He has been actively involved in the Information Security community for decades. Mr. Reich often takes startup and leadership roles and is always found mentoring others in the industry. Most recently, he has led growth at a number of startup companies.


He received his B.S. degree in Education and has earned the CISSP, CRISC, and ITIL Foundation certifications.


He has and continues to hold numerous leadership positions in technology and professional associations, and has delivered hundreds of educational sessions and industry presentations. In 2011, the Information Systems Security Association honored Jeff with the designation of Distinguished Fellow and in October 2015, he was inducted into the ISSA Hall of Fame.


Natalie Sjelin

Position: Associate Director of Training
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Natalie began with the CIAS in 2002 and brings over 14 years of cybersecurity experience to the CIAS training staff.


Ms. Sjelin also serves as the Director of the Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAO) - Standards Organization (SO). In this role she is leading the development of the ISAO SO’s Support Group to assist ISAOs in their overall development and to assist ISAOs to hone their capabilities and services. In addition, Ms. Sjelin plays a significant role in the National Cyber Preparedness Consortium (NCPC) initiatives to design and deliver cyber security training for the nation.


The majority of Ms. Sjelin’ s experience has been in designing, facilitating and executing cyber security exercises and developing and delivering cyber security training at various levels. Her focus has been working with communities to build viable and sustainable cyber security programs.


She received her degree in Computer Information Systems and has earned the CompTIA Security + Certification, as well as a Certified Training Professional certification from Texas A&M.


She speaks regularly for professional groups, meetings, panels and conferences all of the country including the premier RSA conference. Ms. Sjelin has co-authored several white papers on Community Cyber Security topics and most recently co-authored a chapter for a new book entitled Cyber-Physical Security.


William Snowden

Position: Information Security Instructor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

William joined the CIAS this year and brings 7 years of industry experience.


Mr. Snowden works as a Senior Security Analyst on the Security & Compliance Services Team at Digital Defense, Inc. He has served in progressively advancing roles from network support to vulnerability risk management and performing security assessments for organizations in the private sector.


Mr. Snowden has worked to better the security posture of organizations in a wide range of industries, including: financial institutions, higher education, law firms, technology, medical, critical infrastructure, government, from small businesses to Fortune 500..


Mr. Snowden's cybersecurity experience started with the management of network vulnerability scanning programs. During this time he took charge to manage the network scanning schedule, scope, vulnerability results, remediation or mitigation, and progress reporting. Mr. Snowden now primarily conducts security assessments for organizations – from onsite Physical Security Reviews, Social Engineering, to internal, external, and wireless network penetration testing.


Mr. Snowden received two Bachelor Degrees from UTSA in Information Systems and Cyber Security. He currently holds the Network+, Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, CISSP, and Offensive Security Wireless Professional certifications.


Mr. Snowden has spoken at the Security BSides San Antonio Conference in 2015 on the various ways he has seen "blue team" managers hide risks from their stakeholders in a talk named "Fig Leaf Security – How Blue Teams Hide their Naughty Bits".


Nick Sturgeon

Position: Senior Information Security Instructor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Nick started with CIAS in the summer of 2017 and brings over a decade of State Government IT, Security, information sharing and Law Enforcement experience to the CIAS training staff.


Nick currently serves as the Security Operations Center Director for the private security firm Pondurance, LLC in Indianapolis, IN. Additionally, he serves as the Vice President for the Cyber Leadership Alliance, a non-profit organization that brings together experts from government, military, academia and business to: synchronize efforts, solve complex problems, facilitate efficiency and effectiveness, Foster innovation, Promote economic and workforce development in Indiana. As well, Nick serves as the chair for the Services and Capabilities Work Group (WG 2) for the Information Sharing and Analysis Organization Standards Organization (ISAO-SO). As WG 2 Chair, he is responsible for organizing and leading the efforts of the working group and ensures that all product development meets its stated goals. As a working group chair, he also supports and advises the ISAO-SO leadership on the direction of the SO. Nick also serves on the Government Relations Working Group (WG 6) and the Privacy and Security Working Group (WG 4).


Nick’s decade in State Government stated when he was accepted in the 67th Indiana State Police Recruit School (the largest class in the department’s history). Nick was with the Indiana State Police from 2007 to 2015. Nick’s last assignment was as First Sergeant and Assistant Commander of the department’s IT Section. In July of 2015 Nick was selected to be the first manager of the Indiana Information Sharing and Analysis Center and the State of Indiana’s Security Operations Center. In February of 2016 he was appointed as the first Deputy Director for Cyber for the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center. In these positions, he was responsible for developing and operationalizing the information sharing capabilities of the State of Indiana. Nick also advised on the development of Governor Eric Holcomb’s Indiana Executive Cybersecurity Council. Nick was also responsible from briefing the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center Executive Council and the Indiana Counter Terrorism and Security Council (CTASC) on cybersecurity related issues.


He received a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from Indiana State University and a Master of Science in Cyber Forensics from Purdue University. He also has an A+ certification and ITIL Foundations in IT Service Management certification. Nick was also a certified primary police instructor and digital media recovery specialist for the Indiana State Police.


Nick has been dedicated to raising the cybersecurity awareness to the general public in Indiana. He has spoken at range of events including multiple conferences, expert panel discussions, staff development training sessions and guest lectured at multiple Indiana universities. Additionally, he has organized multiple speaking panels featuring cybersecurity experts for around the country. Nick co-authored a technical report on cyber-attacks on the financial sector and assisted in the development of ISAO-SO 300-1 publication. Under Nick’s leadership the IN-ISAC received two national awards the Center for Digital Government Achievement Award (2016) and the Center for Digital Government Cybersecurity Leadership and Innovation Award (2016).


Jeremy West

Position: Information Security Instructor
Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security

Jeremy began with the CIAS in 2017 and brings over 15 years of cybersecurity experience to the organization. He also serves as an Advisor for the Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAO) - Standards Organization (SO). In this role, Jeremy is a contributing member of the ISAO-SO operations staff, while also providing guidance to and oversight of ISAO working groups.


Mr. West has consulted for multiple Fortune 500 companies on various projects including; incident management, secure architecture design, identity and access program management, and PCI-DSS adherence. Furthermore, Jeremy has been the lead project security consultant for the United States Airforce and Securities and Exchange Commission for certification and accreditation of a several commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products.


Mr. West holds several security and professional certifications including: Certified Information Security Manager (CISM®), Certified Information Systems and Security Professional (CISSP®), Project Management Professional (PMP®), CompTIA Security+, ITIL v3 Foundation, and a Six Sigma Green Belt. In addition, he has a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communication from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.


He is a regular participant at professional groups, meetings, and conferences. Jeremy actively engages in cyber security research, authors proposals, training content creation, etc. Jeremy was the lead co-author of "Air Force Network Account Management" and contributor to "AFNet Operational Change Management Process" technical orders. Mr. West is member of Information System Security Certification Consortium, Project Management Institute, and the Open Web Application Security Project.
