Geology of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico

History of Geology

Background/Research Interest

Dr. Swanson's research on volcanic rocks of Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental has been published by the Geological Society of American, the American Geophysical Institute, the Instituto de Geologia and in various geologic guidebooks. He recently published a history of early geologic investigations on volcanic rocks of western Mexico. Dr. Swanson also enjoys geoscience writing, including GeoTexas, a book covering Texas Geology. A book in preparation will examine the relationships between Earth's geologic and human history.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Swanson teaches volcanology, economic Geology and introductory geoscience in the core curriculum and Honors Programs.
