The new year has begun on an incredibly exciting note for UTSA and for San Antonio. We have just received word that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected UTSA to receive its distinguished Community Engagement Classification for our commitment to community service.
This recognition is a great achievement for our university. From its very beginning, UTSA has been committed to giving back to the community. It is one of our core values. This prestigious honor recognizes that we are living up to our promise.
UTSA engages the community every day in many different ways. We are a vital part of San Antonio's economy, providing a $1.2 billion impact each year. We support more than 16,000 jobs, and we teach entrepreneurs how to start new businesses, strengthen existing businesses and create jobs.
Community engagement is also about building strong partnerships. Working together, we are building San Antonio's future in transportation, energy, education and health care. We are helping to make the city a destination for cybersecurity and biomedical research.
Last year, more than 15,000 faculty, staff and students took part in UTSA's community engagement programs. They painted homes and provided health care in low-income neighborhoods. They tutored inner-city students in reading and math. They served as mentors and counselors. By sharing their varied talents and giving their time, they made a difference in the lives of more than half a million people.
The Carnegie Foundation designation reflects UTSA's commitment to do our part in shaping our community and improving the quality of life. That's what a Tier One university does.
This is an achievement that we can all be proud of -- faculty, staff, students and everyone in San Antonio.
It's truly a great beginning for what is going to be a great year at UTSA.
President, The University of Texas at San Antonio
