Oregon group presents census analysis workshop

(Jan. 10, 2005)--Gina Clemmer of Portland, Ore., social research company New Urban Research, Inc., presents the one-day workshop, "Mapping Texas Communities: An Introduction to GIS and Community Analysis,"from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 27 and 28 at New Horizons Computer Training Center, 8200 IH-10 West, Suite 105. Registration is $299.

The beginners' workshop on the fundamentals of using a geographic information system (GIS) is geared to social services providers, urban planners and researchers. Participants will learn to interpret national census data and to display and analyze social changes and characteristics.

The organization has presented workshops nationwide, including demographics workshops for the City of Alamo Heights, Bexar County Housing and Human Services, the Texas Department of Health and the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Materials provided with registration are a comprehensive 75-page workbook with exercises and reference worksheets, Demographic Data Resource CD, ArcExplorer map browser and ArcGIS (ArcView 9.0) software 60-day trial CD set.

The workshop covers the fundamentals of using ArcGIS (ArcView 9.0) software; how to thematically map and analyze census data on income, race, language and housing; how to map addresses of clients, volunteers, campaign donations and social service facilities; how to identify gaps in coverage areas by zip code and other geographies; best practices of creating informative and well-designed maps for public dissemination; and resources for free geography files including zip codes and census geography.
