(Jan. 9, 2006)--The UTSA Office of Institutional Diversity is working with several UTSA groups to organize participation in the annual San Antonio Martin Luther King Jr. March, Monday, Jan. 16. The entire UTSA community is invited to participate in the event.

This year's theme is "In the Spirit of Unity and Service -- Remember! Celebrate! Act!"

The march begins at 10 a.m. from the Eastside Boys and Girls Club, 3503 Martin Luther King Drive. The UTSA contingent will meet at 9 a.m. at the chain-link fence near the tennis courts at the club. Participants are encouraged to wear UTSA colors, bring a water bottle and snacks, or have money to buy food at the rally following the march.

Groups from local colleges and universities will march behind dignitaries and children's groups. The march runs approximately two hours, ending at a rally at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa St. The rally begins at noon with a national recording artist, several musical numbers and a keynote speech by Rev. James Meeks, senior pastor of the Salem Baptist Church of Chicago and Illinois state senator from Chicago's 15th District.

To sign up for the event and for information regarding transportation, contact the UTSA Office of Institutional Diversity at (210) 458-4120 or (210) 458-4153.
