By Deborah Keller-Rihn
Coordinator, Picture Your World Youth Photography Project
(June 11, 2007)--The winners of the Bexar Land Trust's Picture Your World Youth Photography Project competition were announced May 6 at an awards ceremony at San Antonio Central Library.
- La Prensa Foundation is newest member of UTSA Lone Star Society
- UTSA alumna Jordan Kaufmann wins $50K for new stent-graft start-up
- UTSA begins new way-finding sign installation this summer at Main Campus
- USA Today: UTSA long jumper Tyler Williamson rescues three-year-old boy
The goal of the project is to motivate young, aspiring photographers to capture the beauty of the natural world. Entries were judged by Arturo Almeida, UTSA art specialist and curator of the UTSA Art Collection
Eight winning entries were announced at the ceremony where the photographers were presented with certificates and $1,375 in cash prizes. As part of the national photography festival, Fotoseptiembre USA, the winning entries will be exhibited Sept. 7-22 at Bihl Haus Arts, a new community gallery at 2803 Fredericksburg Rd.
The Picture Your World Youth Photography Project encourages area youth to look outside the familiar urban setting and explore the natural environment through the eye of a camera lens. The Bexar Land Trust facilitates, educates and advocates protection of natural, cultural and historic resources in Bexar County and surrounding areas for the benefit of present and future generations.
The project aims to familiarize youth with natural surroundings in Bexar County and adjoining areas, to teach students ages 8-18 the techniques of seasoned photographers through workshops and to exhibit the students' photographs. It is one of many of the trust's programs that promote the need for conservation through images showing the interconnectedness of earth, water, sky and all living creatures.
