UTSA Satellite Space presents oil painting exhibit

(Dec. 6, 2007)--The UTSA Department of Art and Art History will present from Dec. 6 to Dec. 16 the UTSA Satellite Space exhibit, "Illuminations," with new works by Roberta Sugan Buckles. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
- Opening receptions, free and open to all, are 6-9 p.m., Thursday-Friday, Dec. 6-7.

According to exhibit curator Connie Swann, Buckles' new series of large oil paintings employs illusionistic realism to question the abstract nature of perception. Her paintings of light on shiny surfaces act as a metaphor for the transformation of sensory experience into meaningful experience.
In Buckles' work, light cast upon a surface alters its appearance echoing the way personal ideas or beliefs alter perception. Buckles' paintings are aesthetically pleasing yet unsettling and purposefully indulgent, bordering on baroque, a dramatic 17th century style with complex forms and heavy ornamentation.
The UTSA Satellite Space is in Blue Star Arts Complex Suite 115 at S. Alamo and Probandt streets. Gallery hours are noon-6 p.m., Friday-Sunday, or by appointment.
