UTSA Responds to Hurricane Ike: How You Can Help

(Sept. 19, 2008)--Below are ways UTSA and San Antonio community members can help those affected by Hurricane Ike in the Houston and Galveston areas.

UTSA Gardner Center for Writing Excellence

UTSA's Judith G. Gardner Center for Writing Excellence will collect non-perishable food items for the San Antonio Food Bank beginning Monday, Sept. 22. Bring items to Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room 2.02.22 on the 1604 Campus. For more information, call (210) 458-6703.

Save the Children

Save the Children is offering assistance to people in San Antonio, Houston and Austin. Read about Save the Children efforts after Hurricane Ike. For more information, visit the Save the Children Web site or call 1-800-728-3843.

San Antonio Food Bank

Cash donations can be made online at the San Antonio Food Bank Web site. To help Hurricane Ike relief, donate food. If you are in the food industry and want to donate meals or product, call (210) 43108310. Also, anyone can drop off donations at the SAFB warehouse at 5200 Old Highway 90W, on the corner of Old Highway 90 and Highway 151. To donate time, volunteers are needed to sort products, pick up donations and prepare food in their community kitchen. For more information, call (210) 431-8311.

San Antonio Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (SAVOAD)

The group has activated the Volunteer Operations Center (VOC) at the Freeman Coliseum Frontier Room. Report to the coliseum to register for volunteer opportunities. The process includes completing an application, background check and orientation. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must bring a photo ID. American Red Cross

To donate, visit the American Red Cross Web site or call (800) REDCROSS (800-733-2767).

Salvation Army

Visit the Salvation Army USA Web site. Note "Hurricane Response" right sidebar.

State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC)

Donation packets will be distributed to UTSA employees the week of September 22 to donate to SECC. Some agencies helped by SECC are United Way agencies.

United Way has established the 2008 Hurricane Recovery Fund to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. Cash donations can be made by credit card at the United Way Web site or by phone at (866) 404-5826. Mail checks to: United Way, 5196 Hamstead Village Way, Suite 135, New Albany, Ohio 43054. On checks, write in the memo line: "United Way 2008 Hurricane Recovery Fund."
