UTSA students gain insights on life, career at Texas women's conference
(Nov. 20, 2014) -- The UTSA Student Leadership Center recently sponsored 31 students to attend the 2014 Texas Conference for Women in Austin, where they networked with more than 6,000 participants from across the country. Nationally recognized speakers shared their wisdom and insights on a range of personal and professional topics.
Texas first lady Anita Perry hosted the conference. Speakers included athlete Diana Nyad, broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien, social activist Shiza Shahid, engineer and entrepreneur Debbie Sterling and business executive and Pulitzer prize winner Sheryl WuDunn.
Students participated in panel discussions, a health and wellness pavilion, a vendor exhibit hall and a career pavilion including a mentor match program and resume critique.
"The conference showed me no matter how long it takes you to accomplish your dreams, don't listen to your inner critic. You can do it!" said Brelyn Donato, a senior kinesiology major.
"It was inspiring to see such a diverse group of women coming together for a common cause of bettering themselves," said senior communication major Courtney Hunter.
"Being successful it is not the amount of experience obtained or the amount of money made, but the passion in one's heart for what they're doing that determines the level of success one attains," said Embler Igwe, a senior in political science and legal studies.
"It was an eye-opening experience that helped educate me on the female perspective of life and business," said Francis Garner, a senior management major.
