UTSA launches pilot program for BCycle shared bikes at Main Campus
(Jan. 15, 2015) -- San Antonio BCycle will launch a pilot program with The University of Texas at San Antonio to offer shared bikes during the spring semester. For the pilot program, UTSA students, faculty and staff can pay only $25 to have one semester of access to the bikes for travel on the Main Campus.
The $25 membership (versus a $64 annual membership for students) also covers BCycle use in downtown San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Fort Worth and 26 other cities across the country.
BCycles are there when you want one. Two BCycle stations and 22 bikes are expected to be ready for use Tuesday, Jan. 20 on the Main Campus near Alvarez Hall and adjacent to the Applied Engineering and Technology Building. Bikes can be checked out and must be returned within one hour to either UTSA BCycle dock to avoid additional charges.
If you are not finished riding after one hour, simply dock and undock your bike at any station to restart the clock. Members can check out bikes quickly at each dock with their B-card (mailed after online registration) or use the credit card on their account at the kiosk.
Download the BCycle smartphone app to locate stations and see how many bikes are at each station. For added convenience, each bike has a basket for books or a bag and a cable lock for quick stops.
For this semester's trial run, San Antonio BCycle is coordinating the program with UTSA Student Government Association President Zack Dunn, UTSA President Ricardo Romo and City Councilman Ron Nirenberg. The program will be evaluated for renewal at the end of the spring semester.
"The addition of BCycle at the Main Campus is another step in our collective efforts to make UTSA a more accessible, livable community," said City Councilman Ron Nirenberg. "By doing more cycling than driving, I hope students will take advantage of the opportunity to save money, burn some calories and enjoy the beautiful UTSA campus."
"We are very excited to launch this pilot satellite system with UTSA," said Gus Sullivan, business development director at San Antonio BCycle. "Installing stations at the Main Campus has been the No. 1 request we have received over the past few years. This is a unique opportunity to transform the way the students move around campus and connect them with downtown San Antonio."
