Roadrunners place third in regional construction competition
(March 23, 2015) -- A team of students from the UTSA Department of Construction Science recently competed for the first time at the 2015 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) / TEXO Region V competition in Dallas.
The UTSA Construction Student Competition Team placed third in the Commercial Building Division of the competition among 12 teams of students from universities across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The team will use its $500 prize toward a matching scholarship to be awarded to a UTSA Construction Science and Management major for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Coached by UTSA Construction Science Department Chair Yilmaz Karasulu, the team consisted of UTSA students Gabriella Garcia, Karl Larsen, Michael Hasty, David Goolsby, Hung Ngo and Josue Martinez.
The project selected this year was an $11 million Holt CAT Sales and Service Facility in Little Elm, Texas, which included specialized high-strength concrete slabs and an overhead crane system. The team submitted a 45-page Construction Management at Risk mock proposal for the project as part of the competition.
The mock proposal included staffing information, a company organization chart, a stakeholder list, an executive summary, a project coordination plan, pre-construction services, construction methodology, site logistics, a schedule report, a breakdown of general construction conditions, and safety and quality assurance protocols.
The team used a custom-built interactive mobile unit that projects a 90-inch image on a plywood surface to deliver its proposal to a panel of judges and representatives from AUI Inc, which sponsored this year’s competition.
Competition preparation and travel costs were supported by funds from the UTSA Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), which advises the UTSA Department of Construction Science on matters relating to the construction industry.
The UTSA Department of Construction Science provides quality construction education for the next generation of construction professionals and leaders based on a solid foundation of ethical, managerial and technical principles.
