COLFA hosts 8th Annual African American Studies Symposium April 9
(April 7, 2015) -- The UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts will host its 8th Annual African American Studies Spring Symposium, “Make Some Noise: Pushing Back, Acting Out, Speaking Up” from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 in the University Center Denman Ballroom (UC 2.01.28) on the UTSA Main Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The all-day symposium provides an opportunity for attendees to engage with national scholars about their current research projects and discuss academic trends that are relevant to Americans in the United States.
The morning kicks off at 8:15 a.m. with welcome remarks from UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Lisa Firmin, UTSA associate provost for diversity and recruitment, and Daniel Gelo, dean of the UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
At 8:45 a.m., Richard Lewis, UTSA professor of sociology will present “A View from the Mountain Top: Emerging a New Civil Rights Movement.” Howard Smith, UTSA associate professor of bicultural-bilingual studies, will moderate.
At 10 a.m., James Hill, Chair and Professor of English at Albany State University will discuss “Flights of Fancy Beyond the Veil: W.E.B. Du Bois as a Satirist.” Kelly Rodgers, assistant professor of psychology at the City University of New York, will serve as moderator.
At 2:30 p.m., Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator will present the keynote address “Poetry Springs Forth: African-American History Through Our Eyes.”
Over the past 30 years, the University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech University has been one of the most widely read American poets. She has committed her life to fighting for civil rights and equality and has always insisted on presenting the truth as she sees it. Giovanni has maintained a prominent place as a strong voice of the Black community and has focused on the individual power of one, to make a difference in oneself and the lives of others.

Other presenters include Derek Hicks, assistant professor of religion and culture at Wake Forest University, Katherine Turner, visiting assistant professor of musicology at the University of Houston, Antoinette Ellis-Williams, professor of women and gender studies at New Jersey City University, Marlon Moore, assistant professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Grisel Acosta, assistant professor of English at City University of New York.
