Alamo Manufacturing Partnership announces focus areas for pursuit of federal funding

(Aug. 28, 2015) —In July, the Alamo Manufacturing Partnership (AMP), a consortium of manufacturing partners across the Alamo region, was one of 12 groups in the country to receive designation in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s exclusive Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) program. Today, elected leaders, scholars, industry executives and the AMP consortium partners gathered at The University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus to discuss funding priorities and next steps, now that the IMCP designation allows the AMP consortium to pursue exclusive federal funding opportunities.

This morning, AMP leaders announced they would pursue funding in three key areas: technology-based workforce development and training; expansion of technology development and its use by industry to increase productivity; and research and development support to encourage innovation.

The IMCP designation allows the eight-county Alamo region to receive coordinated support for its strategies from eleven federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Housing and Urban Development and other agencies.

IMCP communities also will receive a dedicated federal liaison to help them navigate available federal resources and will be recognized on a government website, accessible to prospective private foreign and domestic investors who are looking for information on the communities’ competitive attributes.

UTSA is leading the AMP with support from the San Antonio Manufacturing Association.

While the AMP consortium aims to foster development throughout Alamo region, the IMCP designation will primarily impact the transportation equipment-manufacturing sector.

“This federal designation not only provides significant opportunities for our regional community, industry growth, and research at UTSA through federal funding opportunities, but it will also enable a deeper collaboration among the partners in our community beyond federal opportunities”, said Can Saygin, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Assistant Vice President for Research and the AMP point of contact for federal relations.

Manufacturing activities are wide and varied at UTSA. The UTSA College of Engineering offers academic programs in mechanical engineering, and its faculty members and students conduct manufacturing related research. Moreover, the UTSA Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems provides education and training in lean manufacturing, logistics engineering, warehouse systems, automation technologies and advanced sensors and robotics to manufacturing companies across the nation.

Since 1979, the UTSA Institute of Economic Development has provided a suite of services to entrepreneurs and business owners to grow and strengthen the economy at the local, regional and national level. Its strong partnerships in the manufacturing industry locally, nationally and abroad will allow for even greater collaboration with AMP consortium members to further grow manufacturing in the designated 8 county region.
