San Antonio artist’s work featured in new UTSA exhibit
(March 17, 2016) -- The UTSA Downtown Art Gallery is home to a new art exhibit featuring the work of nationally and internationally emerging artist, Abraham Mojica. "New Works", presented by UTSA President Ricardo Romo and Dr. Harriett Romo, is a compilation of paintings Mojica created from his life experiences.
“Abraham Mojica's work is greatly informed by the adventurous twists and turns he has experienced since leaving Guadalajara, Mexico at age 19,” said Arturo Infante Almeida, art specialist and curator of the UTSA Art Collection. “Using boldly gestural brush strokes, he unabashedly delights in creating striking canvases where figurative subjects, often negotiating a visual language of shape and color, evoke distant memories and dreams.”
A variety of unique life experiences have inspired Mojica’s art. He has played in bands and served as a karate instructor. Notably, he spent a few years with a traveling circus, which gave him the opportunity to travel around Central America and his native Mexico, meeting different kinds of people. In addition to painting, Mojica also creates jewelry, accessories, handmade doors, furniture, ceramics, sculpture, drawings and music.
The UTSA Art Collection, comprised of gifts and fine art acquisitions, contains paintings, sculptures, works on paper and mixed media by many talented south Texas artists, some of whom are UTSA graduates. The collection is curated by Almeida. Pieces in the top-tier UTSA Art Collection are displayed across the university's three campuses to enhance the educational environment for thousands of students, faculty and staff, while making UTSA aesthetically pleasant for visitors.
Abraham Mojica’s New Works Exhibit is on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, through May 27 at the UTSA Downtown Art Gallery (DB 1.122). The gallery is located inside the Durango Building at 501 W. César E. Chávez Blvd.
