(March 22, 2016) -- UTSA President Ricardo Romo today announced that John Frederick is stepping down as provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective June 1. Frederick will return to the faculty and take a role in shaping the university’s academic leadership development programs.

Frederick joined UTSA in February 2008 following more than 20 years at the University of Nevada, Reno where he served as a chemistry faculty member, department chair and, for seven years, as executive vice president and provost.

While serving as UTSA provost, Frederick led the academic affairs team during a period of growth that included the academic implementation of the university’s strategic plan in 2008, an increase in the number of academic programs and faculty members, enhanced processes, support and recognition for faculty, and the recruitment of several college deans and vice provosts. In 2012-13, he also served as interim vice president for research.

“My thanks to Dr. Frederick for his years of dedicated service to our university,” said Romo. “He is committed to seeing UTSA achieve Tier One designation and, in his new role, will continue to contribute to that standard of excellence.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have played a leadership role at UTSA during a critical juncture in its history,” said Frederick. “UTSA has built an outstanding faculty, and a collaborative team of deans and academic support staff. I am confident that, as it moves to the next level of strategic planning, the university will continue to grow and prosper in the coming years.”

“On a personal level, this transition allows me to explore some long-deferred academic passions, and serve the university in new ways,” said Frederick.

The university will conduct a national search for a new provost and vice president for academic affairs. During the transition, vice president for research Mauli Agrawal will serve as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.
