New students begin their UTSA journey at Convocation

Midnight Light Midnight Light

More than 7,000 new students expected to take part in yearly tradition

(Aug. 22, 2016) — Today, more than 7,000 new Roadrunners will come together to take the first steps of their higher education journey. Convocation is the opening sentence of a UTSA story that is bookended by commencement and the receipt of life-changing degrees.

The UTSA community is invited to stop by the Convocation Center to welcome all the new first-time freshmen and transfer students who’ve chosen to make UTSA their home for the next four years.

These new students will learn what it means to be a UTSA Roadrunner. They’ll hear from UTSA President Ricardo Romo and other university and student leaders. They’ll be introduced to some of UTSA’s many traditions, like the Roadrunner Creed, the UTSA Fight Song and the UTSA Alma Mater.

As a special treat, for the first time, the Class of 2020 will gather on the Recreation Field Complex to take an official class photo.

Convocation is mandatory for all incoming freshmen. Transfer students are also encouraged to attend to make the most of their introduction to UTSA life. Due to the large number of students expected this year, two convocation ceremonies will be held.

UTSA Playfair takes place parallel to the convocation ceremonies at the UTSA Recreation and Wellness Center. It is a team-building experience designed to immerse students in UTSA’s vibrant student life. During these sessions, UTSA students learn about student organizations, play a variety of games and are given the opportunity to forge new friendships. Students will alternate between PlayFair and Convocation.

After Convocation, students also will have the opportunity to learn and become better connected to the college where their intended major is housed at 2016 Explore Your Major.
