Meet a Roadrunner: Kimberly Norton has seen UTSA’s growth to an aspiring Tier One university

UTSA employee Kim Norton has been part of a changing campus landscape


(August 18, 2016) -- Meet Kimberly Norton. She started working at UTSA 19 years ago and has seen a lot of changes in her time on campus.

“I took a temp job here in Facilities and Work Control and eventually became the manager of the department and have worked here ever since,” said Norton. She is passionate about UTSA and loves coming to work to collaborate with her team members.

Norton is the work control manager in the Office of Facilities Business and Customer Services. Her department processes work orders for the entire university. Over the years, the process has changed just like the university.

“It has changed from a paper-based program to a web-based format. Technicians carry iPhones to review the work orders and record notes. They do everything electronically now,” said Norton.

Her department processes as many as 60,000 work orders each year for the UTSA Main, Downtown and Hemisfair campuses. The work orders typically range from maintenance requests to events and even construction projects. She says she’s enjoyed watching the development and expansion of the campuses over the years.

“We went from being a very small commuter school to what we are today almost 30,000 students. The things I’ve seen since I’ve started here are amazing like the University Center expansion. I also saw the Business Building, Engineering Building, Park West Complex and buildings on the Downtown Campus go through construction. It’s incredible how quickly we have grown,” said Norton.

Norton enjoys the people she works with and daily interactions with technicians, faculty and students. In December 2015, while working full-time and with the support of her department she completed her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She once considered being a teacher and in a way she takes on that role at UTSA. Norton trains people how to use the iService desk online system that allows people to monitor the status of their work requests.

UTSA’s top-tier Facilities team was recognized nationally for its hard work earlier this year. The department won the 2016 Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA): Leadership in Educational Facilities Award for Excellence. UTSA was the first University of Texas System institution and one of only three institutions in the state of Texas ever to receive the award.

“There are so many people who work really hard in Facilities, and it is a great honor for us to be recognized by winning this national award. I am extremely proud of my department for being such an integral part of the Facilities team,” said Norton.

After 19 years, Norton is excited to see what the future holds for UTSA.

“Everyone talks about becoming a Tier One university,” said Norton. “We all want to be there. UTSA is on the path to achieve that with its top-tier programs, outstanding faculty, staff and students.”
